Dry Taps During Supply Cuts
Rand Water work on the bulk lines or a Joburg Water main that bursts under a busy road can leave Roodepoort without water for a day, sometimes longer. Properties up on the ridges feel it first, because the little pressure that is left can't push water uphill. When supply comes back, the air rushing ahead of it hammers ball valves and old joints. A crusted element runs hotter and longer for the same shower, burns through power and then fails, or the thermostat starts sticking. Power Trips and the Hot Water

Winter nights on the open plots and in the low ground near the spruits are noticeably colder than in town. A garden tap on a long exposed run, a pipe crossing to the outbuilding or a geyser overflow on the south wall can freeze, crack and only start leaking when the sun warms it up. We cut out the split piece, replace it and lag the pipe so it lasts the next cold front.
Pressure on the Ridges
Around Kloofendal, Roodekrans and the other ridges, water pressure is all about height. Houses near the top can get a dribble at peak times, while homes at the foot of the hill take so much pressure that taps, ball valves and geyser fittings wear out early and old joints start to weep. We fit pressure-reducing valves where it's too high, booster pumps where it's too low, and bring in leak detection when the meter keeps turning.
Roots Working Into the Sewer
Big established trees in Roodepoort need water, and in a dry winter the old clay sewer line is the easiest place to find it. Fine roots slip in at the joints, then swell into a thick plug that catches paper and fat. Slow toilets and a yard gully that bubbles after the washing machine drains are the early signs. We cut the roots, run a camera to see how badly the pipe is cracked and replace the broken length.
